Day One– A One Year Update

8 09 2007

Wow… where to start on a whole year update?

I think I had better start before that day in Madrid when I decided to work and travel as a mobile world citizen. So….

I have been an entrepreneur since my first part-time business in ‘95. I have been a full-time entrepreneur since ‘99 after I got fired from a bureaucratic job in the mental health field…but that is a whole-nother story for another day. In 2005 I got married, sold my business in Ohio and moved to San Francisco. To make a long confusing story very short, over the next year my wife decided she had had enough of the entrepreneur life, marriage and me. So she moved back to Ohio in September 2006 and we were divorced. In July, 2006 I took a trip to Spain to hang out with my good buddy Nacho so I could get my head on straight as my marriage was in a whirl-wind of turmoil. The trip consisted of one week in Madrid and one week sailing around the island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea.

One afternoon in Madrid while waiting for my buddy to get off of work I was in the Plaza de Toros de las Ventas working on business concepts. That is when I decided to become a mobile world citizen, someone who could travel and do business online or over the phone anywhere, anytime.

At the time I knew no one else that was doing this, but it seemed totally possible with the technology available. I was currently mentoring entrepreneurs over the phone and figured I only needed to expand it out to make it globally viable. The next step I saw was to add a passive business structure and of course, add an online aspect.

Once I got back to the states I dealt with my relationship and realized it was already over, at least in her mind. This last year I have been rebuilding my foundation financially and emotionally. I’ll be damned if it didn’t take me a whole lot more than I thought it would to do both. In fact, I am still working on both. I am not yet where I want to be, but I figure I am about 75% of the way there. Currently, I still reside in San Francisco while I build my business and financial base to travel the world. Follow this journal and follow my progress.

Through my research I have found others doing what I want to do. Two of the more notable are: Tim Ferriss author of “The 4 hour Work Week” and Anthony Page of “Working Nomad dot com”. Both are worthy of checking out. Buy their books and read them (disclaimer: as of publishing I do not have any affiliate relationship with either, but it is in my plan for becoming a mobile world citizen).

Here is what I want to accomplish with this journal. I will outline my progress financially, socially and emotionally as I grow. I will also talk about the tools I use and find along the way. I will talk about my plans, accomplishments and challenges. I will also be including pictures and videos of my experiences. And most importantly, I will be including my thoughts and feelings as I go.

Thank you for joining me in my journey. I am excited to have you along for the ride and to learn from my successes and failures!
